6 Search Engine Friendly Blog Tips

by A.D Paterson on 19/09/2009

Everyone wants to be an internet marketer these days, but few people know the right way to go about it. If you’ve been struggling with your blog marketing then have a look at the 6 tips outlined in this article – it could be just what you need to get things flowing again.

Quite a few things are going to have an impact on just how well your blog does in the search engine rankings. While it may be relatively easy to get indexed by the search engines, have you been ranked well using the keywords that your potential readers/buyers are typing into the search engines to find sites in your niche?

1.  Is your URL and title right? Are you using a short URL and title that has your main keyword in it? These are two important, and controllable, ways that you can have a say over what you want your blog to rank well for. It also gives you a chance to make sure that the title and URL are closely matched to the niche that you’re in.

2.  Keep the content flowing. Having a constant stream of content translates into a constant stream of traffic. The reason for this is the search engines love new, fresh, and unique content, and the more you can supply the more they’ll keep coming back to index your blog. If you’ve used the right keywords you start to get noticed by people searching in your niche, which means you’re going to start getting a lot more blog traffic.

3.  Have categories that reflect your keywords. If you’re optimising your content to your keywords, and those keywords are the words people will be typing in to find you in the search engines, then it makes sense that they should be grouped under keyword rich categories, too. The more often you can us your keywords in a reader friendly way on you blog the better you should start to rank for them in the search engines i.e. if you want to write a blog series about starting a blog then some of the categories you could use, because people will be searching on those keywords, might be “blog templates”, “how to start a blog”, blog directories”, “blog traffic”, and, seeing it’s the main topic of the series, “start a blog”.

4.  Tag your posts. Always tag your posts just before you publish them. Tagging them helps to show the search engines the keywords that you’re trying to rank for with that post, it also helps readers to find other posts on subjects using those keywords on your blog.

5.  Ping regularly. Everytime you post something to your blog you should have it pinged to all of the major directories. Using http://www.pingomatic.com will save you a lot of time. These directories have a high influence on the search engines, and if you’re in with the directories, you’ll be in the search engines sights. The more you post content to your blog, the more you’ll be able to ping the sites to let them know you’ve added something new.

6.  Backlinks from blog directories. Blog directories are a fantastic way of getting the one way backlinks to your blog that the search engines love. The theory goes something like this: if a lot of sites from the same niche like to your blog, it must be because you have something valuable to say, meaning you must be an authority of some type. The search engines love authority sites and give them the ranking they deserve.

The above 6 tips wouldn’t be all that difficult to put in place, if you aren’t already doing them. Take some time, now’s as good as any, to have a look at your blog and see if you can use any of the tips right now.
