If You Want to Make Money Blogging You Need a Plan

by A.D Paterson on 22/09/2009

There are two crucial things that you’ll need to have at the head of your list of ‘things to do’ when starting your blog marketing. The two things are how to get blog traffic, and, how to convert that traffic into sales or sign-ups when you do get them to your blog.

The first place you should start is your conversion rate. If you start to get traffic to your site, and you don’t have any conversion worth talking about, then at best you’re just never going to see those people again. At worst you’re never going to see them again and it’ll have cost you money to get them there in the first place. If you’re going to use any form of PPC (pay-per-click) to get them there you’ll want to, at least, get close to breaking even on the deal in the early days.

Take a good look at your copywriting. Is it the sort of thing that would get you to part with your hard earned cash if you’d just arrived at the blog for the first time? Not everyone is good at copywriting, but that doesn’t have to be a problem anymore. At one time it would have cost you a fortune to get someone to write you even a modest salesletter, but, with the increase in the number of freelancing sites like elance.com you can get a decent copywriter to write for you at a fraction of what it would have cost you just a few years ago.

Give away something for nothing. If you have something of value that you can giveaway, ebook or report that is, then give it to people who are willing to give you their name and email address in exchange. If you’re willing to give away something of value then people will be interested in seeing what they get if they actually pay you.

Remember, the emails you send need to, first and foremost, be of some use to the reader. If they aren’t the people will stop reading them and unsubscribe from your list. Sell the product subtly by pointing out one important benefit in each of the emails you send – you should send one a day for at least seven days.

With the conversion sort for the moment it’s time to get the traffic to your blog. Below are some of the tried and tested methods people have been using down the years.

Pay-per-click (PPC): The most recognised PPC ads are the Adwords ads at the right hand side when you do a search in Google. Before you go down this route, look at the Google tutorials. PPC is a great way to get highly targeted blog traffic in double quick time – but it can be expensive if you get it wrong – so make sure you know what you’re doing first.

Organic search engine traffic: This is traffic that you’ll get from ranking well in the search engines. Organic traffic is usually a slow process, but there are ways to help it along. Make sure that your content is relevant to your niche, has keyword rich content, titles, categories and URL. Make sure you add new content on a regular basis, and, see if you can get links back to your site on a blog or website that’s in your niche – swapping is a good way to go about getting them.

Other people’s lists: If you know other people in your niche that have a newsletter, or just a large list of subscribers, then approach them about sending out a solo ad. The ads aren’t usually that expensive to do and could give your own list a bump because you’re sending your ad to a list of people already interested in your niche.

Returning traffic: People who keep returning to your blog are like gold. If they see enough value in your blog to keep coming back, then there’s a good chance they are going to buy something from you at some stage. Its one thing to pay for people who come to your blog once and never return, but it shows you’re doing something right if they keep coming back.

There will always be room for improvement when it comes to traffic and conversions. Your first best target is to breakeven on any money you’re paying out for the traffic, so get some conversions to start with, once you have conversions you can start to make small tracked changes to see if you can improve on the conversions – split testing is a great way to do that. Try doing it now, before you miss out on even more traffic and money.
