Having decided that I was going to setup my blog on a hosting site I had a look around and decided to go with host monster, mainly because they were slightly cheaper than the others, but still did everything I wanted i.e. unlimited bandwidth, unlimited disk space etc. I then chose a domain name.
Domain names are pretty straight forward. Go to somewhere like Go Daddy (they also do hosting), search for the one you want, then follow the instructions. Easy. Of course, if you have a site that’s aimed at a specific type of reader you’ll want to try to get a domain name that they’d be looking for if they were searching on Google, Yahoo! or Bing… so going for makememoney.com might not be the best option if your target reader just wants to know how to grow extra large turnips.
When you have your hosting sorted out you’ll need to ‘point’ the domain name at the site. This is great because it means that even if you swap hosting sites further down the line you only need to ‘point’ the domain name at the new host. The hosting site should tell you what the DNS is (that’s pretty much the location of the site on the host you’ll be using) then you go back to the domain name site and change the DNS from the one assigned to the domain name by the domain name company, and put in the one the hosting company gave you. This can be done within a few minutes and then you can get on with setting everything up.
One more point on changing the DNS of the domain name, it will show instantly, but, it could take a few days to filter through to all of the search engines that already have you indexed.
At this stage you can to go to the fantastico section of the c-panel, get your wordpress blog installed, and actually be able to see it because the domain name is linked to it.
After that it’s case off picking a theme, getting the right settings, installing plugings, writing your first posts….
