Picking a Blog Theme

by A.D Paterson on 03/09/2009

When I was creating my blog I started looking at getting plugins before getting the blog theme for my site, it was a bit of a waste of time. I discovered that a lot of the blog themes that you can get will already have most of the plugins that you’ll want to use – so start with the blog theme and see what you need to get after you have that setup.

It’s always good to have an idea of what ‘theme’ your blog might take on i.e. is it a personal blog? Or, will it be aimed at a specific group of people (such as the supporters of a football team)? Once you know that you can have a look around for blog themes that will suit your particular niche – it saves you a lot of time – unless you like browsing blog themes.

You’ll probably want to get a free blog theme until you know more about the whole blogging business, and have some money to spare. Don’t worry; blog themes can be change at the press on a button, even on existing blogs.

The obvious place to start to look for your blog theme is in wordpress.org, they have a huge amount of free blog themes and you can search for them based on what they include (usually the types of widgets, or styles). You won’t even have to go to wordpress to find them because you can just click on the ‘appearance’ button in your admin area and then click on ‘add new themes’. This will give you all the options you need for your search, in the ‘feature filter’ or you can click one of the links to see the ‘featured’ ‘newest’ or ‘recently updated’ blog themes.

When you see a blog theme you like you can preview it. If you like it then you just click the ‘install’, which will install the blog theme for you under the ‘themes’ section in the sub-directory for your blog. Once that’s done it’s just a case of clicking ‘themes’ under the ‘appearance’ section and clicking on the new blog theme. You’ll get a preview of how the new blog theme will look and then you just activate it to be up and running with your new look blog.

Now you have the blog theme sorted, but does the blog have all of the widgets you want?
