The Power of Blog Plugins – Part One

by A.D Paterson on 04/09/2009

As mentioned in an earlier post I spent ages finding various plugins before I installed my blog theme, only to find out many of them were already included, or at least the theme could already do what I had intended to do with the plugins, so check out the theme you have to see what’s already there.

I should mention the difference between plugins and widgets. Widgets will normally appear down the right hand side of the blog (though that can be changed by the user) and you go to ‘appearance’, then ‘widgets’ in the WordPress admin, and drag across any widgets you want to appear on your blog. You may have to do a bit of configuration and put a title for the widget you’re going to have appearing on your blog.

Plugins are more like add on scripts for your blog. Often the results of the plugin will be visible to the person looking at your blog, but, they can just as easily be running in the background improving your admin area.

One of the quickest, easiest, and ever so slightly free, places to get your plugins is from WordPress themselves. When you’re in your WordPress admin click on the ‘plugins’, ‘add new’, and then you have a choice of ‘Featured’, ‘Popular’, ‘Newest’, or ‘Recently Updated’ plugins. Believe me; you can spend hours looking through all of them.

They will ‘normally’ have a button to press that will install them directly into your ‘plugins’ directory. Then they will show up as an installed plugin. Remember to activate the plugins once you’ve installed them! Then you should be able to configure them how you want – they will either show up in the ‘plugins’ on the left hand side of the WordPress admin, or they may even show up in a section of their own (often just under the ‘settings’ drop down menu.)

Tomorrow I’ll go over a few of the plugins that I’ve found to be useful.
