My rough summery of what happened – was too excited (after all the years of waiting for this moment to happen) to document it in sports reporter type detail.
I have to confess that up till the 93rd minute of the New Zealand vs. Slovakia World Cup Match, this post was going to be titled ‘NZ’s Best Ever Loss.’ But who’d have thought…
New Zealand had started the game by far the better of the two sides, but, having failed to make the most of the few chances they had, they found the Slovakian side playing their way back into the match.
‘The All Whites’ didn’t have the best of starts to the second half, and Slovakia eventually began to capitalize on some uncertain defending.
The goal, when it did come, was (arguably) off side… well, it was close enough to have been called the majority of the time.
The All Whites were lacking pace in the midfield, and there was a lack of quality ball getting through to the front men.
Both sides were having problems getting clear-cut shooting opportunities, but the best, which fell to Slovakia, was ably stopped by New Zealand new-boy, Winston Reid.
Deep into injury time, and having started to put more pressure on the Slovakian defense, Winston Reid out jumped the Slovakian defense to head the ball into the back of the net.
Having waited 28 years to reach their second World Cup Final the New Zealand All Whites gained their first ever senior competition point.
Next up… Italy!
