I’ve learnt over the years that some of the things that you think are going to be really hard to do, actually turn out to be really, really easy… and make you slap your head in frustration when you find out just how easy, and a blog will make you do that!
I’ve been blogging now for sometime (off and on, on various blogs) and one of the things that really annoyed me was when I posted an article and the whole thing showed up on the front page. Don’t get me wrong, actually managing to get it on there in the first place was quite an achievement, in the early days, but I didn’t want it all there at once.
For linking purposes I wanted people to visit the first page of the blog, see extracts of the last couple of blog posts, and then head off to the full article of whichever one they wanted to read. I didn’t want the page filled with just one or two articles.
I spent ages searching all of the settings, and a few websites, to find out how I could do it. Other people were managing to do it on their blogs – so why wouldn’t it work on mine?
Today I discovered a solution.
I was looking at a post that had been added to another blog of mine, by a site that provides blog posts from people who want to get their articles circulated, and I noticed something odd. <!– more–>. Eh?
I checked the blog, and then the article itself, and the article had the <!–more–> right at the point where it stopped on the front page and gave people the change to click to read the rest of the article. D’oh!* it was so easy to do.
I have now gone back and changed all of the articles on that site so that they just have a teaser on the front page.
With that ‘difficult’ thing ending up being far easier than expected I’m off to read up on Quantum Theory, after all, how difficult could that be?
Oh, by the way, I realise the irony in the fact that this blog actually does all of that for me automatically.
