Doctor Who: The New Age Doctor

Series 6 (or is it series 31?) of Doctor Who has finished just recently, and I have to say that I quite liked Matt Smith in the part, I think it was the fish-finger custard that did it, but I want to talk about something else – the actual age of the Doctor himself.

One of the things that has really frustrated my about ‘the new series’ is the constant referral to the Doctor as being 900 – 906 years old, because he’s much, much older than that.

In the ‘classic’ series he told Mel that he was 953. I’ll set the scene. It’s ‘Time and the Rani’ and the Doctor has just regenerated (into Sylvester McCoy, the seventh Doctor Who) and he’s being held captive by the Rani – I never said it was a full and visually appealing scene. As he is trying to work out the keypad combination to open the door a voice from the other side gives the number as 953. Here’s the response from the Doctor to Mel:

“Who’d have thought she’d have been so obvious. That’s my age – and the Rani’s.”

It is 42 minutes and 30 seconds (give or take) if you want to be really nerdy and look for yourself.

Ok, his age probably isn’t a big deal, but he sure goes on about being just over 900, when he should actually be telling people that he’s just over 1000 years old (at a rough guess).

That’s one of my few problems with the new series, well, now that we (finally) don’t have to hear about Rose, that is.

Must go off and knock several years off of my passport… well… if it’s good enough for Doctor Who…
