The Pros and Cons of E-Books

by A.D Paterson on 14/10/2010

What are the pros and cons of e-books when it comes to basing a business around them? With the number of e-books that are available online you would be forgiven for thinking that every man and his dog has one of their very own up for sale, but do they? Are they the sort of thing you should be getting into to make money online?

In this, the first of five articles on e-books, we’re going to look at what they are, whether you need one of your very own, and finally, the pros and cons of e-books.

Just what are e-books?

Put simply, they are a digital version of a normal book. They are usually created using a word processor and then compiled into a format that will keep the pages ‘bound’ together so that you can read them in order. The format that’s most commonly used to compile them is the portable document format (pdf).

You can get paid versions of pdf compilers, or, if paying for it is a bit out of your league for the moment, there are some very good free versions that will do just as good a job.

Do you actually need an e-book of your own?

The answer to this question is quite simply yes – and no. Ok, maybe not all that simple.

There are plenty of ways of making money from other people’s products, and e-books also come into that category. If you want to make money online by selling other people’s, then that’s fine, but, a lot of online marketers just use that method as a way of testing out the market for their own potential products.

What are the pros and cons of e-books if you want to make money online?

Let’s start with the pros:

• They are relatively quick and easy to create.
• You can test out whether it’s worth taking the time to create your own by selling other people’s first.
• You don’t have to keep a stock of them as you would physical products.
• The production costs to start with are quite low, and it costs virtually nothing after that to fulfill orders.
• People are willing to pay prices that they wouldn’t dream of paying for a book in the ‘real’ world.

Now the cons:

• There are a number of people out there who take some sort of pride from getting other people’s paid products and distributing them freely online.
• A buyer, for one reason or another, can buy your e-book, and then ask for a refund, meaning they have a copy of your book, and haven’t really had to pay anything for it.
• It can be a time consuming process if you’re researching and writing it yourself.

While some of those cons may have you wondering whether it’s all going to be worth it, it should be added that not everyone will try to take advantage of you, you can still make money from the ‘stolen’ books by having affiliate links embedded in them, and that there are quick ways to get an e-book created.

So there we have it, a number of the pros and cons of e-books.

If you want to make money online then start by selling someone else’s product to gauge the market, meaning you don’t waste your time and money getting something ready that won’t sell. Always have an eye on something you can write, or have written, because you want to make all of the money from your hard work of selling, not just a commission.

People may try to rip you off, but that’s just the way things are. There are things you can do about it, but that usually cost you more money than it’s worth. Monetize the book by adding affiliate links and the chances are you’ll still make money from ‘stolen’ books.

Are you ready to get started and make money online, now that you know the pros and cons of e-books?
