Is Writing the Right Job for a Wahm?

by A.D Paterson on 15/02/2011

Do you have a knack for writing and have always thought that it could be your ideal job? Many Wahms (work at home moms or, for us males, work at home men) have started to make a very good living out of writing for other people, and a lot of this is down to the internet and the many websites out there looking for content on a constant basis.

When I was just starting out online, and had no idea of the path I wanted to take towards the promised riches and rewards of the new online frontier, writing was one of the furthest things from my mind. When I finally left school I thought my days of having to put anything creative down on a piece of paper were over, and they were, to a certain extent, it’s now all done electronically.

It had never occurred to me that while other people are scrambling to get content on their sites, so as to drag in the search engines, and thereby the potential buyers, that they were going to be looking for people to provide that content for them; that’s right, the majority of them need people writing for them.

Right about now, which is approximately the point where it happened for me, you’ll be saying to yourself “great. I don’t know anything about most of the subjects online, and, how do I get someone to take me on as a writer, anyway?” Good question, I’m glad you asked.

To start with this is being done on the internet, and guess what the internet is, that’s right, it’s a huge collection of information. No matter what the topic is you’re going to find some information about it online, well, unless it’s as niche such as ‘underwater plum juggling’ – though even that may have a site dedicated to it by now.

Anyway, the point is that most of the details you’ll need on a topic is available to you with a little bit of research on your part. If you get a job writing for a site then the chances are they’re going to have some set ideas on the content they need, so they’ll be able to provide you with most of the material you need, it’s just down to you to put it down into a readable article.

How do you get someone to take you on as a writer? Most people will suggest going to one of the many online freelance sites, and while this may be a good idea for jobs in the future, you may want to steer clear of them to start with.

When I was first starting out I signed up with a number of freelancing sites and thought I’d be picking up work in no time, some time later I realised it wasn’t quite going to work that way. There are a lot of pluses when using a freelancing site, such as the payment systems and setting deadlines, but the biggest minus is the number of people looking for work on the sites.

If you’re a Wahm and don’t have any examples of your writing, you’re going to find it to be a bit of a struggle trying to get a job on the freelance sites; not saying you can’t get the odd job, but finding a lot of well paying jobs will be difficult. You’ll start under bidding other people at a ridicules rate to get work and even then you’re likely to miss out to the people with 27 zillion positive feedbacks. So what can you do?

The first thing is to start a blog so that you can showcase your writing. The blog doesn’t have to be anything spectacular to start with; it just needs to be somewhere that you can send clients so they can see how good you are at writing.

The next thing to do is to get an EzineArticles account. You’ll be amazed at how many people will find out about you if you start posting your articles to EzineArticles. The final thing is an action plan on how you’re going to get paying clients.
One thing you can do is to target websites in a niche that you feel comfortable in writing about. One of the buzz words in internet marketing is ‘outsourcing’, I’m not going to put outsourcing down, because that’s what we’ll be doing, but the amount of rubbish people get back when they outsource is criminal.

If you get in contact with the owners of these websites you’ll be able to point them in the direction of both your blog, and your EzineArticles account, and they’ll be able to get a no risks look at what you can do. You may, for the first article or two, do them a deal where you’ll write for free so long as you get links back to your site; the more relevant links the more the search engines will be interested in your blog.

There are other ways to get work, too.

If that hasn’t whetted your appetite as a Wahm looking to make some money writing, then maybe a job where you write isn’t the right job for you?
